“How to be Happy at Work”
By Annie McKee
I picked up Dr. Annie McKee’s How to be Happy at Work in an airport bookstore way back in pre-pandemic times. Although it came out in 2018, the messages about finding purpose, hope, and friendships at work are needed right now. With the economy so uncertain, many people are hunkering down in their jobs even if they would love to quit, because there aren’t lots of options.
If you can’t leave the job, can you still find happiness at work? Annie McKee says a resounding “Yes, you can!” She reminds us that life is too short to be unhappy at work.
How to be Happy at Work is the perfect read if you feel discouraged, disconnected, and a lack of purpose in your working life. It will challenge you to throw away old ideas that are no longer useful, such as “Don’t make friends at work” and “Working more is always better.” The book is a big dose of enthusiastic encouragement to use your emotional intelligence to take control of how you show up in the office, increase hope for a positive work life, and create fun and supportive connections at work. This easy-to-read book is packed with interesting stories and solid research evidence, as well as thought exercises to guide you in increasing your purpose, hope, and friendships at work.
