“Life Is In The Transitions: Mastering Change At Any Age”
By Bruce Feiler
I can’t think of a single person who has not had to deal with change at some point in their life. I recently wrote about how getting laid off from your job is a major life transition. And in my own life, I voluntarily disrupted everything when I left a secure, but toxic job on the East Coast and moved to my husband’s hometown in the Midwest.
Bruce Feiler, in his book, Life is in the Transitions, reminds us that everyone faces changes and transitions – or lifequakes, as he calls them - no matter your age, no matter whether you choose them or not, and no matter how prepared you are.
The book takes a deep dive into how we deal with events that disrupt our lives and force us to deviate from our best-laid plans. Using real-life stories from extensive personal interviews, he outlines the types of changes people experience and the various tools and methods that people use to find meaning and stability in their lives again.
The book blends personal stories with research findings to describe why and how people navigate major life disruptions. Ten years ago, when I was wading through the fog and uncertainty of leaving my job, this book would been a great resource to help me feel less alone as I figuring out where my life was going next.
