Shift: Managing Your Emotions – So They Don’t Manage You by Ethan Kross
BOOK REVIEW
“Shift: Managing Your Emotions—So They Don’t Manage You”
BY ETHAN KROSS
This was the book I needed right now. I’ve been knee-deep in discouragement, and my emotions have been spiraling and festering. For anyone who has felt overwhelmed by anxiety, fear, sadness, regret, guilt, grief, or anger, Shift, by Dr. Ethan Kross, gives you the tools to shift your perspective and manage these emotions.
While this book is not specifically geared to work and career issues, anyone struggling with cascading negative emotions from burnout, unemployment, job searching, or toxic work environments will find practical strategies for not letting those emotions dominate your life.
Shift offers ideas for taking small, but powerful action steps to shift emotions. Do you need to turn down the volume on anxiety and turn up the volume on joy? Yes, therapy can be helpful (I’m not out of a job yet) … and you can shift your mood in the moment by playing an upbeat song or getting yourself out in nature.
Dr. Kross translates scientific research findings on emotions into usable pieces of information, and in the process debunks some myths about managing our emotions. There are no one-size-fits-all solutions.
Is distracting yourself from negative emotions bad? Not always.
Is venting or processing the past helpful? Not always.
Is being present in the moment necessary? Not always.
