BY dr. jessamy hibberd
Do you feel like a fraud at work?
Do you fear that your boss will discover that you’ve no idea what you’re doing?
Do you work super hard so no one will suspect you’re an imposter?
Do you assume you’ve been successful because you’re just lucky?
Do you worry that this next project will be a complete failure (even though other projects have gone well)?
If you answered “yes” to any of these, please order a copy of Dr. Jessamy Hibber’s book, The Imposter Cure, today.
You don’t need to live in fear of being a fraud. I know this sounds like a commercial, but I promise you I have no stake in the sale of this book (the author is from the UK, so it isn’t that easy to find this book in the US).
Every day, I work with people who have an intense fear that they will be exposed as a fraud or imposter at work. They describe work lives filled with crippling self-doubt. They try to manage by overworking, procrastinating, and trying to be perfect in every way. They imagine scenarios where the boss comes and says “How in the world did we hire you? We made a huge mistake because you clearly have no idea what you’re doing!” (I admit: I have felt this way many times in my professional life).
Not coincidentally, those with the greatest imposter feelings tend to be highly accomplished, driven, and deeply thinking individuals. It’s no surprise that those who most fear being an imposter are the least likely to be faking it. (Your semi-narcissistic colleague who does the bare minimum but loves to talk about how important their work is? No imposter feelings there.)
In The Imposter Cure, Dr. Hibberd describes the hallmark symptoms of imposter syndrome, where it often comes from, and the negative toll it takes. She then applies psychological principles and techniques to help you manage the burden and stress of constantly feeling like you aren’t good enough.
The last third of the book dives into specific strategies to use to respond differently to imposter thoughts and feelings. The sections on overcoming overworking and procrastinating are especially helpful for workers veering into major burnout who know that something needs to change but aren’t sure what to do.
The book applies empirically-supported treatment approaches for changing imposter thoughts and beliefs, while the conversational style of the book makes it an easy read.
